Feast of the First Light Bar
The inspiration for this bar was to feature indigenous Wampanoag ingredients, primarily in the form of corn , one of the most important crops historically and culturally to the Wampanoag people. As we approach Thanksgiving, in this place where the Pilgrims first landed there is perhaps no place more potently symbolic of the importance of the role that corn played between these two cultures.
For the Wampanoag there has always been a deep respect and gratitude for the life-giving sustenance that the corn provided. They would interplant corn, beans, and squash together to form a Three Sisters Garden. Interplanted gardens such as these have ecological advantages: soil regeneration, varied nutrition, and resistance to plant pests and disease. Corn was also stored and preserved during the cold winter months, providing sustenance for the winter months ahead.
All fall we have been laboring to make stores of this corn chocolate to be molded into bars. As we transition into winter, we are reminded of the words of Michael 'Tender Heart' Markley of the Seaconke Wampanoag- "Let us give thanks to the creator for all that he gives. The harvest moon has shined its brilliance over our home and now as we store the harvest of our work the creator gives his sustenance. The Earth will now rest through the coming seasons storing the energy needed to once again feed our people"
We invite you to take part in this sweet and meaningful expression of gratitude to the harvest and to the Wampanoag tribe for our namesake and the land upon which we make our chocolate. A portion of the proceeds of this bar will be donated to the Nauset Indian Foundation, which is an indigenous owned non-profit that offers educational programs, land conservation consultations; as well preserving resources of cultural importance. All contributions made will help support their vision of broader educational research platforms, erecting informative signs, protecting lands and the natural resources that come from them and also working towards building a Nauset Indian Foundation Museum, featuring a living history site and three sisters garden.
